Electronic Publishing Students Attend Prestigious 'Annual Lecture' in Stationers' Hall

EP Master's students have been invited to attend the Stationer's Annual Lecture, 2008. This year's lecture is given by Gail Rebuck CBE, Chairman and Chief Executive of Random House and is entitled "New Chapter or Last Page: Publishing Books in a Digital Age". It is a rare opportunity to hear from a senior publisher in the elegant surroundings of Stationers' Hall. The Educational Charity of the Stationers' and Newspaper Makers' Company provide a prestigous annual bursary worth 6,000 to support a student studying on the EP course. More info here.

Recent EP graduate Ben Lupton (2006-07) has won 'best paper' at 9th International Online Journalism Symposium in Austin, USA.

Ben researched the use of video and multimedia in online newsrooms, interviewing the editors of the BBC News website, FT.com, TimesOnline, Sky.com, and Mirror.co.uk amongst others.

City University MSc Electronic Publishing student relates his experience at Yoosk.com for The Times

MSc Electronic Publishing student Marc Doolan relates his experience as a Yoosk journalist - an assignment on his MSc EP course at City University. Marc Doolan says he chose City University Master's degree in Electronic Publishing as the course 'ticked all of my boxes, as it teaches a comprehensive combination of on-line journalism and website design'. City University journalism students link up with new citizen journalism website Yoosk

Students from City University London are collaborating with new citizen media website Yoosk.com to create interactive and innovative news features. The students, all on City's MSc Electronic Publishing, have created their own features for Yoosk.com on subjects such as the proposal for a third runway for Stansted Airport, the role of journalists in the Madeleine McCann story and the inclusion of female boxing in the 2012 London Olympics. EP alumni launches online fashion business

Former EP student Eloise Grey has recently launched an online fashion retailer, www.eloisegrey.com.

The site sells "fine ethical clothing, made in the United Kingdom with Isle of Mull tweed". Eloise, whose career has included executive positions with AOL, is also writing a blog about her new venture.

AHRC Annual Report celebrates EP graduate's success

In a case study of EP graduate Emily Conradi in the AHRC Annual Report, she credits the course as being instrumental in enabling her to secure her first job as a Freelance Multi-media production Assistant with Pearson Education.

Emily was funded for her MSc in Electronic Publishing by the AHRC's Professional Preparation Master’s Scheme during 2005-6.

“One of the greatest things this course has to offer is such strong ties to the web industry; students undertake both a work experience placement and a summer project working with a client,” explains Emily. "It is an excellent grounding and I feel that it has given me many possible avenues that I can now pursue.”

Rik snapped up by City

Just days after handing in his Master's project for Druk White Lotus School Rik Williams (EP 2005-6) was being interviewed for a position as a Web Services Developer in the web team at City University. Rik was offered the job and will join Dan Jackson (EP 2000-1) in February 2007 as part of the small team responsible for City's external and internal websites. During his master's study, Rik was also the recipient of the Educational Charity of the Stationers' and Newspaper Makers' Company annual bursary award.

Research honour for EP student

A recent EP graduate (2005-6) is having a paper based on his Master's thesis published in a top academic journal. Jack Herbert's work on the business models of online newspapers is to appear in the June 2007 edition of Journalism Practice, an international peer-reviewed journal published by Taylor and Francis. The editor said that paper offered "exemplar features of the sort of piece for which I hope Journalism Practice might provide a forum for discussion".

EP students work with BBC on 'digital lifestyles' project

Students on the MA in Electronic Publishing have been working with the BBC News website, researching and producing multimedia story packages on 'digital lifestyles'. An introductory talk by key staff at the BBC - including site editor Steve Herrman - launched the project.

Subsequently the BBC's technology editor helped guide the students' work which included articles on: blogging, podcasting, mmorpgs, and the social networking sites Myspace.com and Cyworld. The students' work can be accessed via this website:

Electronic Publishing students flew to Paris in February to produce a news website covering the Salon International de l'Agriculture in Paris. The Salon is a huge event in France, with nearly 1 million visitors and saturation coverage on French TV and radio. The City team - funded by the French Government - provide the English language news coverage for the duration of the nine-day event. Neil Thurman, who set-up this scheme with the French Ministry of Agriculture four years ago, said "this annual event provides a fantastic opportunity for our EP students to work on a live news publication and collaborate with an international team."

Honour for Electronic Publishing lecturer

Neil Thurman attending the 7th International symposium on Online JournalismNeil Thurman, Senior lecturer in Electronic Publishing, attended the 7th International Symposium on Online Journalism this April, where his paper on Citizen Journalism was voted 'best paper'. The event - held at the University of Texas, Austin - was attended by delegates including: the Editor-in-Chief of The New York Times on the Web, and the Executive Editors of both the WashingtonPost.com and the HoustonChronicle.com.

EP students hit new heights in web design

The new website for an award-winning community school in the Himalayas Students on the Master's in Electronic Publishing were commissioned to design and build a new website for an award-winning community school in the Himalayas. The project was managed by senior lecturer Neil Thurman, who wanted to make EP students' expertise available to charities, in this case the Drukpa Trust. The Druk White Lotus School's ethos is to maintain the community's rich cultural traditions, based on Tibetan Buddhism, while equipping their children for contemporary life. The design project finished with presentations to the Trust on 28 March 2006.

World Wide Wed

Sarah Richardson (an Electronic Publishing graduate from 2004) has become a partner in WeddingPath (www.weddingpath.com), an innovative start-up helping users plan their nuptials. She is also the site's News And Features Editor. Sarah has previously worked for companies including BBC Worldwide, News International and Channel Five, and recently planned her own wedding.

Lemon finds Menon

Congratulations to Prash Menon (Electronic Publishing graduate from 2004). Prash has just been recruited as a web producer at the Lemon Foundation in Clerkenwell, London. With an impressive client list including Ford, HP and Egg, the Lemon Foundation is a managed network providing interactive production & design services.

EP student's career arcs upwards

Electronic Publishing graduate Jed Richards has been appointed as a Flash designer with Arc Interactive. Part of the Publicis group, their clients include LexisNexis, Visa and AT&T. Jed graduated from City's EP programme in 2004. Take a look at this site -- Jed's work on which helped earn him a distinction.

EP graduate to be top marketeer at E-consultancy.com

Internet marketing publisher E-consultancy has recruited EP graduate Joslyn Merideth to the newly created role of Marketing Manager.

Joslyn graduated from City's Master's in Electronic Publishing in 2004. She will coordinate E-consultancy's schedule of 70+ events in 2005, while supporting the team on consultancy projects and maintaining the website.

Ashley Friedlein, CEO of E-consultancy, comments, "The success of our events in 2004 made it clear we needed to create a dedicated marketing role within the team. Joslyn has worked with us on projects previously, so we have first-hand knowledge of her skills and experience. We are glad to have Joslyn permanently on-board to coordinate our internet marketing events, such as Supplier Showcases and Roundtables."

Joslyn joins E-consultancy from Unique Digital, and has worked with clients including Barclaycard, Barnardo's, Freemans, Kuoni and Ladbrokes.

A great Tonic

Electronic Publishing graduate Pete Goodman will soon be joining award-winning web design agency Tonic. Pete previously worked as a Web Developer for the Nature Publishing Group. He graduated, with distinction, from City's EP programme in 2004.

Tonic, who won a prestigious New Media Age Effectiveness Award for their Think Natural website, are based in Shoreditch and have an impressive client-list including Vodaphone, Sony, Polydor, MTV, Universal Music, VW, General Electric, Sky, Siemens, Abbey National, Reuters, Barclaycard, Save the Children, Disney World and Microsoft.
